May the 28th
My Dear wife I now have a chance to send a letter and I now hasten to write you a few lines to let you know that I am still alive and well and hope and pray that you and the Children are enjoying good health Oh Nila what a battle that was that we had on the 15th of this month but by the blessing of god your All was not hurt nor scart but it was hard to sea the boys fall all around me thear was 2 of the Color guard killed and one was wounded in the leg or rather limb as I suppose I should say to a lady but you must excuse me for / you know that I am not verry polite eaven when at home but enough of this I am sorry to say that Johney is missing we dont know wheather he was wounded or killed or a prisoner Jerry is not with the regiment I dont know whear he is but think he is at martinsburg but dont know E M is hear now we are under General Hunter now Sigel is in the army of the Potomac hear but dont know for we cant get no papers and but few letters but write for we shall get them some time I got your letter of the 14th and was glad to hear from my Nila once / more and to hear that you was quite well but that dont quite satisfy me are you well and tough that is the question with me at this time and how are all of the fathers amd Mothers I dont believe you can read half of this for my pencil now dont you put aney bad meaning to it is verry poor we are living on the Contry now we have 12 hard tack for 7 days but we have foraged and got some flower so I think we shall not go verry hungrey hear how are you getting along now tell me all about it and I shall / feel better we lost 12 men in wounded killed and missing six we dont know wheather they wer killed or taken prisoners Johney is all the one that you know I dont think of aney more to write those verses I prise for I know they are what my Nila feels and I thank you for them I read them every day you must write to me and the rest for I cant and now good morning Nila Dear
