                                                                                                            Apr 12th 1865
 
My Dear wife I now seat my self to write you a few words to let you know that I am still alive and well and hope you are the same but as I have not hear from you for 2 weeks but we have ben on the march all the time we Charged Battery Gregg a week ago last monday and last sunday we fought lee hear and he surrenderd to us so we hope and believe the fighting is all done I write you on this paper it is the Confederate paper so you can se what they have my health is good
