                                                                                                Staunton Va June the 8 1864
My Dear wife I now take this oportunity to write you a few lines to let you know that through the blessings of god I am still alive and well and sound limb mind and hope that you may gett this for I fear that you have not received all that I have written the last one that I wrote we wer in woodstock I thin think and I received one from you dated the 14 of May and that is the last that I have heard and I think you can tell something about how I feal allthough I know that you are not called uppon to stand and be shot at but Death is in the land as / at Home as well as in the army well Nila I suppose you have heard or will before you gett this that we have had another battle but this time we did not retreat but folowed them up we lost some 121 killed and bettween 90 and 100 wounded Samuel Hall was killed was shott in the neck Erastus was left back with the ambulance I hear before we went into the woods on the Charge but you would of laughed your self to se the greys run thear was one ball that cut a piece out of one of my blouse sleaves some 5 inches from my hand but did not hit my shirt it tuck out a piece 1 inch wide and 2 long / thear was a good maney wounded in our Companey Captain was hitt in the legg slight though I gess 3 wer killed and now while I think Johney is at New Markett wounded in the thigh flesh Torry & Dolan & Ford are all sound when we firs went into the fight the Sargant that carreys the Colors was shot and fell I stood next to him on the left and picked the Colors up thank god dear Nila I read in a paper that Henry was killed and when you write tell me if it is so and how father and mother seamed to feal oh may god spair them that sorow if posible with his will if not help them to look to Him good day
