Newton J. Belton was born around 1843 in South Carolina to William Belton. His father was a farmer who owned $250 of personal property by 1860. He grew up in Calhoun County, Alabama.
He enlisted in the Confederate army on June 4, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company G of the 10th Alabama Infantry. By October 1864, he was serving as a musician. His regiment surrendered on April 9, 1865, as part of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.
He returned to Calhoun County after the war, and he married Elizabeth Defonce on February 21, 1867. They had at least six children: Virginia, born around 1868; Mary, born around 1870; Martha, born around 1871; George, born around 1874; James, born around 1876; and William, born around 1881. He worked as a farmer, and by 1870, he owned $100 of real estate and $200 of personal property.
His wife died by the early 1890s, and he married Martha C. Flannagan on December 4, 1892. They moved to Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, in the late 1800s, and he worked as a farmer there. He died in Simsboro, Louisiana, in October 1911.
