Albert N. Hubbard to Venila A. Hubbard, 22 February 1865
Camp Holly armey of the James
Feb the 22 1865
My Dear wife I now seat my self to write you a few lines as I have liesure and can atend to write a letter a little longer than the one that I sent the next day after I arrived within the lines of the armey of the James and found the Boys glad to se me back to the old regiment again and I had mutch rather be hear than to be stragling around for hear we get enough to eat and good Quarters when I got back I found French hear and Clark and found some of the boys that I had not seen since we wer on the raid up / the Valley and the Colonel came out and shook hands heartley and said they wer glad to se us back again when I got back I found that Wm Carr had ben promoted to Sergant all so Wm Claradge and I found that my promotion was dated Oct the 7 1864 as Serg’t so I am now the (3) third Seargt in the old and gallant Companey B of the 34 Mass Volenteer Inft and I am glad that I have the honor to belong to that Reg’t the guns Nila are better than mine was when I had it to Pittsfield so you can guess we are on the right of the armey of the James and have no picket duty to do but have to go on fatiuge and clean guns and have reviews and have inspections and fix up grand / but you know that I cant do that and so they have to take me as I am and make the best of it the Colord troops do the picket duty and so we have none of it to do I wrote you some 2 or 3 letters while at the Camp Distrabution and shall hope to hear from you again now we wer called up last night to sign the pay roles and some of the boys got all that was du them but I got onley four months pay and that onley 16 dollars per month for they did not say on the pay roles that I was a Corporal when I was promoted to Serg’t but it will be put on the next pay role so I shall / gett it if I live and I think it will be just as good then as now but I had hoped to get 8 months pay instead of 4 but so it goes I have made the greanbacks fly since I got it and shall make more of it if I live shall send some home to you or Newton
I remain as ever
Yours
