Camp Holly armey of the James
Saturday Night March the 18 1865
Dear wife as I have commensed a letter to you and have written one sheet full I will now try and write a little on this and so make out a good long letter as you some times write a part of a sheet over and then you end off by saying that you have no nuse to write well Nila I some times think that I have nuthing new to write but then I think that Nila wants to hear from all and so I sit down and commence and before I get fairly started I have got a sheet full and then I think of some thing that I ment to of said but did not and now while I am writing I can hear the cannon roar over on / left and they are right with it but I dont think that it will amount to much that is I dont think that it will have aney afect on us hear yett it may but if the Johnies come hear they will find that they have got a hard place to take but still if they come we shall try and give them as hard a time as we can and I dont think they will ever try to come hear yett they must do something and what that something will be we cant tell but must wait and learn by events that transpire I got a letter from Mother to day she says that she had allmost give up and thought that I had forgotten that I had a mother well I am not to blame if letters are lost for I wrote to fathers folks just as soon / as I got hear and I have written some 3 or 4 letters since and I have thought it strange that I did not get aney answer to the letters but that acounts for it all and so I feel better as I got a letter from mother to day and she said they was all well and smart as usual but said that Melintha was not as well this spring and I got one from Jane and one from Melintha and one from you so you se that I got four letters to day and I was glad to hear from all of you and I believe the letters wer all dated the tuelfth of March so they all came at once and now they have found out whear I am I hope they will write oftiner than before and I will try and answer all that I gett you say onslow gets 1,75 per day what is Jordon / doing that he can pay so large wages well I suppose if I was at home I could get as large wages as he but I am not thear but I hope to live to se the day when I can take my little wife and Children and go over to fathers and make a visit and then go back to a home of our own if we live and have our health untill the last of July then we shall think of seeing our loved ones and of soon taking our wife by the hand and and give her a good kiss and then let us not forgett the God who has spaird our lives and health and has brought us through all the dangers and preserved our lives ever since we wer born and has never slumberd or slept but has kept us from all harm and has crowned our lives with joy and peace let us not forget to ask God to watch over us and protect us from harm and if consistent with his will that our lives may be spaird and that we may again be united and that we may be spaird to each other for maney long years to come and that we may bring up those little ones in the fear and admonition of the lord and may you have grace and streangth granted you from on hight to direct them aright is my prayer
I remain your Husband Nila
