My Dear wife
                        I now seat my self to write you a few lines but taps have sounded and we sometimes have to put out our lights but I think that I will risk it and write a few lines to my Nila aney way for I know that she will want to hear from her old man as often as she can for some four months and then I hope to bee whear I can tell you how I am without writing and if my life / is spaird untill that time I hope this war will be closed and we shall all gett home once more for I should like to get at the old table well filled with some of mothers old fashioned donuts but I cant make those in my tin cup but I manage to gett along but you must wait for four months and then you had better keep in the shade if I live to gett Home but I cant write aney more to night and I want you / write as often as you can aford and I will pay the postage if you cant aford and be carfull and dont fill the sheet to full so I will close
