Dear Father,
Having a few leasure moments I will improve them by writing you; Nothing of much importance has happened in or arround Washington since my last. Our Regt is verry healthy and most of our men in good spirits. An accident in happened in the RI 2nd Regt which is encamped 1/2 mild from us; On “Tuesday Morning” they came out on a drill and a canister shot exploded it being the carelessness of a Corporal who left a cap on it the night before and forgot the piece. and while the Regt was on the Field it got hit with something and exploded killed the “Corporal” and 2 Privates, and wounded six others which are a doing verry well. The Funeral took place yestaday and the Regt Turned out and marched through the Principle streets and went through the “Masonic honors” which looked verry Solumn.
Within four days eight more Regts marched accross the Potomac into Virginia and the Rebels seen to retreat. our Picket Guard or rather the Guard of our Troops that are stationed in Virginia are within 1 mild of each other the Rebels. To day I have been into the city of Washington. Went into the National Hotel. Saw James M Cavanaugh. he is a member of Congress from Minisota So I understood, but did not have time to see him long I am in good health and hope to remain so; Write to me often and as often as any thing happens you shall hear off it direct your
letter to, Orderly sergeant, H M Crafts, Co. I, 2nd Regt N H Volunteers
my regards to all, in hast Washington DC
