Affectionate Father
                                    Your kind letter came duly to hand and contence noticed. I think I appreciate and understand the meaning of it. Well I never had such a thought enter my mind in any shape whatever. And always thought every thing of my home. You always treated me with nothing but perfect respect and Kindnes for which I fulley appreciate. And I cannot think what should lead you to think that my feeling are anything different from that due respect which I owe to you. And My Father do not think for once that it is so. I perhaps ought to have made you a visit befor I came here and truly intended to But we had orders to leave Claremont one week sooner than we expected to and in that time I intend to with my Wife make you a visit. And you may be assured that it would be great pleasure for me to do so. The way I come to enlist into the United States Service was I had a good office offered me, and times being so very hard and I thought I might run some risk of my life for the sake of the neadful which we are all after. And my pay being very good; I am orderly Sergeant of Co I. 2d Regt New Hampshire Volunteers My business is to do all writing for Co. call roll call Co out on drill make morning report / report Co to Col at afternoon parade transact what business is to do for the Co. I do not have to gow in the ranks except on the abscence of So of the at atall. After I call out the Co I do not have to stop with them except the abscence of some of the officers and in this case I have to help take command of the Company and I tell you I am quite military man. We are ordered to start for Washington in one week from Monday next.
 
            Hugh Richardson your old stage driver is now living in Littleton and he has a son by the name of Remy perhaps you remember him he is in a company as a Private from Lancaster & Littleton Co.
 
            If I can get a furlow from the Col I will come home this week about thursday and make you a visit but in case I cannot I bid you a good by and may god Bless all of you My best Regards to Mother, and my Brothers, and Father if I return alive I will have some thing to fall upon in case of a rainey day.
