Stephen R. Whitney to Friend, 25 September 1863
Fort Reno, DC. Sept 25th 1863.

My Dear Friend
Your welcome letter dated August 2nd & 6th was received on the 10th of the same Month. I was not aware that so much time had passed since then until I looked at the dates to night. figures tell me so, they never lie. But perhaps it is as well. I have not had any news of importance to communicate. I was sick about the time I received your letter, but I am hearty now. You speak about attending the funeral of Lewis W Quay he was a member of Co K. / I did not know that he professed to be a member of the army of Jesus. We have religious meetings here in camp four times each week, but I never saw him at any. I was frequently in the hospital when he was sick and when letters came for him I would carry them to his bedside and hand them to him. but he never told me that he was a “Soldier of the Cross”…

Sept 27th
Bedtime over took me the other night before I finished my letter but I’ll try and finish it this bright and beautiful Sabbath morning. The weather is cool and dry here but it healthy for us. There is not many cases of fever. / Adam Campbell is a nurse in the hospital. he says he is acquainted with you. I told him that I was a going to write to you. he said send my love to him…I saw Johnny Westfall this morning he is well. I saw Elias yesterday he was well. I saw Gilbert Keenholts a few days ago, he was well. he is in a fort over half a mile from here and I do not get over there very often, or he over here…I carry the mail yet…Hoping that you will forgive me for not writing sooner and that you will not imitate my example. I will close with my best respects to you and all inquiring friends. I hope your Sister will be better the next / time I hear from Her.
