Fort Kearney Jany 20th 1864
Dear Friend Edward
It is with great pleasure that i now embrace this opportunity to send a few more lines to you an absent friend. it has ben a long time sence i have heard from you. i have ben waiting for an answer to the letter i sent you last Oct. but Elias thinks that you never got it. So i hope that you will excus me for my delay and answer as soon as you can make it convieniently Now Edward as Concerning my health. it was never better than it is at present and i hope that these few lines will finde you and your family & Friends enjoying the Same Blessing /
the weather at present is verry mild and pleasant but yesterday it rained all day and the ground is verry muddy. we have not had more than 4 inches of snow this winter and that is all gone. as concerning the war there is nothing new with us at present all is quiet here. Edward i learn that sence i Burried my Wife last spring that Death has Vuisited a great number of families of my acquaintance and has left them to mourn there untimely Loss but Edward why should we morne when we are Satesfide that they have goen to a far better world than this. we trust and pray that thay are in heaven / and when it pleaseth the Lord to take us from this word of trouble. i hope that we all may be prepared to meet with them in that place above where trouble and sorrow is no more. i suppose that it was hard and a sorrowfull time for Alonzo & his wife when the lost there oldest Girl. as well as it was for all the rest of us. Edward when you wright let me know who peter hilton has got to keep house for him and Give my respects to high and all the rest of there family. tell highram i wish he would send me a letter and i will answer it. i want you to / Give my best respects to your unckle James & Henry and to Alonzo & John Whipple & James Merselus & wife I will wright to them soon. Also to Robt Zeh John & Elias & mr whitney is well and send there respects to you all. Edward I hope you will excuse this poor wrighting & short letter for it is getting late and the next time I will try and do better. So now I will close this by sending my Love and best wishes to you and all enquiring Friends
