Stephen R. Whitney to Edward Livingston, 13 March 1864
Fort Reno, D.C. March 13th 1864.
Dear Friend Edward.
Your favor of February 14th was received on the 19th of the same I was glad to hear from you, but being busy and scarcity of news has prevented me from writing until now. and I will not promise you much of a letter and then you will not be disappointed after you have read it. I am well. I received a letter from home on the 23rd of Feb’y All were well at home. I think the solution of that puzzle you sent is Stephen R Whitney. /
I was glad to hear that Henry Gallup had taken a bosom companion. I hope he will see much happiness with his wife. Tell him I wish him much joy…
The people of Washington are holding a sanitary fair I believe they are succeeding finely. I was in one day soon after it commenced, and a Miss put me to work to fix up her stand She was a smasher. she is about 6 feet 3 inches tall and square built a regular giraffe. I did not have much time to look around before I had to go and get the mail, but what I saw / was beautiful, except the rebel flags that were on exhibition. they were cheap things and looked hateful…I saw Elias, Johnny and Gilbert a day or two ago. they were well. Elias had just got back from a furlough. Pleasant Spring has come again the pretty birds are here they cheer us with their sweet songs, the grass begins to peep up through the sod. Farmers are ploughing their ground preparing it for crops…
Excuse a short letter news are scarce. Write again soon.
To Your Friend
S. R. Whitney.
