Alvan Bennett Fisher
Alvan Bennett Fisher was born on April 20, 1838, in Wrentham, Massachusetts, to Carlo and Mary Fisher. His father was a carpenter. Fisher grew up and attended school in Wrentham, and he married Julia A. Heywood on January 13, 1859. They had at least four children: Ellen, born around 1860; Miles, born around 1861; George, born around 1866; and Emily, born around 1869. By the early 1860s, he was working as a blacksmith.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on August 1, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in the 10th Massachusetts Light Artillery on September 9, 1862. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 9 ½ inches tall, with light hair and blue eyes. The regiment took part in the Overland Campaign, the siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox campaign. He mustered out on June 9, 1865.
 
Fisher settled in Rutland, Massachusetts, after the war and resumed his work as a blacksmith. By 1870, he owned $1,000 of real estate and $175 of personal property. He applied for a federal pension in September 1887 and eventually secured one. His wife died around 1899, and he married Harriet E. Walker in September 1899. They moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the early 1900s. He died of apoplexy in Worcester, Massachusetts, on May 28, 1910.
