Albert N. Hubbard to Venila A. Hubbard, 1862
Alexandria the 7 1862
Dear Nila I now take my pen to let you know what the weather is Down hear well when I got up this morning the wind blew and it was Clowdey and about 8 oclock it began to snow and it is now 1 oclock and it still snows but some of it has melted but it is 2 inches deep and how longe it will snow I cant tell it is not very cold we started to worck on the new fort when it began to snow and we worcked in the storm till 11 oclock and our Captain sent a man to the lieutenant to get the men home if he could no other way to runnaway and so we left for our house / and I think that we shall stay thare till it stops snowing I am still enjoying good health and a contented mind as far as posible for you know that I have left my all to go and fight for my cuntrey and I hope that I shall live to cum back to my Dear wife and Children that we may engoy those happey houre over again that we have spent togather but if god has other wise orderd it then I submit and try and put my trust in him Wm Dolan has got back from the hospital he did not stay thare onley 1 day and 1 night hamblin Ford takes this fare rather hard he grows poor and I grow fat /
since I comenced this letter I have received your letter of the 1 of november and the 27 of oct and was glad to hear that you wer all well and I got 1 from Mrs Dawes I had loocked for a letter from you for 3 or four days and you had better believe that I was glad when the name of Albert N Hubbard was called then I sat down and read your letters over 2 and then I read the other and would like to read 1 from you every day you wrote that oney was at home and that he was staying over his time that may do for him but it would not do in this Regiment they have to be right up and dressed and then it is all right we have got the best Captain in the Regiment I think and so I am suited with the Captain /
I suppose that you will se by the date of this letter and then you will think that I am 27 years old but I dont feel aney older than I did when I left home I must close now for the boys are waiting to make their beads and so I must close
