John W. Caldwell to Kate W. Caldwell, 12 February 1864
Camp of the Anderson Cavalry
near Huntsville Ala Feby 12th 1864

Dear Kate
I received your letter that you sent by Mr Hathaway last night after I went to bed Ned Smith brought it up to me It was dated on the 17th of Jany I also received a letter from you yesterday dated Feb 1st which I was glad to receive. I did not get to see Hathaway as he did not come any farther than Chattanooga.

We are still in the same camp I do not know how long we are going to stay. their is a rumor floating around camp that we are going back to our old camp near Chattanooga but I hope that we do not go / their as I never did like that camp.

This morning Lt. Col. Lamborn started home. he has resigned so their will be a chance for promotion for some person. I suppose that Maj Betts will get it as he is the next on the line.

A few days ago Edward Mills read one part of a letter that he received from his sister Mrs. Dewilt, enquiring about me He wrote to his sister the same day & I suppose that she has received it before this. He is very well and is with his company in this camp. I hope that I will be home in time for the skating next winter and then I will have a good time skating with the young ladies as I suppose / by that time some of them will be good skater’s and it will be more pleasure skating with them.

The time is growing short. I have been away thirty months in a few days, and only six more to stay I hope and then I will be a free man to go where I please. then I will be a happy man. not that I am not one now, I am better pleased with the service than I expected to be, than when I left home, but I do not care how soon that my time is out so that I can go home and enjoy it. no person can tell what home is with out going away, but that is enough of such talk. if I keep on I will get home sick, and that will not do. /

To day it is very pleasant but this country is very changeable one day warm and plesant and the next cold and disagreable. I will stop writing as I have very little to write about

Remember me to John and all my friends

Give my love to all

I am well and enjoy good health

                                    Good bye
                        from your affectionate brother
