John W. Caldwell to Kate W. Caldwell, 29 June 1864
Hd Qrts in the field near
Kennessaw Mt Geo. June 29th 1864

Dear Kate
I have just received your letter of June 20th and I received your letter of June 11th on the 23rd of this month so I thought I would answer it as I have a little time before stable call but I have very little news to write about.

I am glad to heare that John arm is better

I think that our family is well repented at the fair Jerry in the Hardware department and Annie in the Dry goods. I would like to see the fair, but that cannot be but I am glad to heare that Philadelphia will go ahead of New York. I like to see it /

Since I last wrote to you we have changed our camp several times, but not far as the Rebels are on the mountain and have very strong position.

We are about eight miles from Big Shanty and about two miles from Kennessaw Mt. and about two or three miles from Marietta. We have a nice camp in the woods and very nicely fix. at the back of our tent we have a shelter tent fix with a table in it that I made. we use it for eating, writing and playing cards. I do not know wether I ever told you that we used cards. we do not gamble as they do in most camps. I never saw any person play for money in our camp

When we get in camp we do / not know how long we will stay some time only one night and then at other times several days on last Monday a part of the 14th Corps made a charge on the Rebels works and lost quite a number the hospital is very near our camp I have see a great many operations some have their legs, and other arms and fingers taken of when I left home I could not look at them any think like it, but I can stand it now.

I hope by the time you get this letter that you will be well again. I will have to stop as I have to go and draw forage

Remember me to all

Give my love to all     good bye

                        from your affectionate brother
