Camp near Vinings Station Geo
July 17th 1864
Dear Kate
It has been some time since I wrote to you I think the last letter was written on the 29th of last month.
Since I last wrote I made a trip to Chattanooga on busness.
I left camp early in the morning of the 9th and got back on the the 16th so I was gone from one Saturday to the next Saturday. I had a very pleasant trip not a pleasant going and coming as I had to ride in the freight cars and coming back on top of the cars in the hot sun / it took me nearly two days each way.
I had a nice time in Chattanooga the best thing was the eating I staid with the ordelies that belong to the excort. they live very well. there is seven of them mess together, have a colord man to cook for them, and have plenty of all kind of vegetables which they get from the Sanitary gardens and nice bread and butter beside the government rations that they draw. so you can see that I lived gay when I was their The change was a pleasant one from hard tack and pork to all the good things, but with such living I did not feel any better, as I always enjoy my food what ever I have to eat. as long as I keep well I will get along / all right.
I received a letter from Annie a few days ago when I was in Chattanooga. I was glad to get it as it has been some time sinc she has written to me. She told me about the gay time she had at the fair.
Hd Qrts has been at this place since the 6th of this month but I do not think that we will be here much longer as it is reported that we will stay hea move camp this afternoon but I think that it will be tomorrow before before we move as this is Sunday and very seldom move on a Sunday if they can help it.
I gess the next camp will be the other side of the river. most of the troops have been across for / several days.
The river is only eight miles from Atlanta, so we are geting closs to it and hope to be in it before long, and then I think we will rest for a short time to rest the troops
I will stop as I have very little to write about
Remember me to John and all enquiring friends.
I am well.
Give my love to all
Good bye
from your affectionate brother
