John W. Caldwell to Kate W. Caldwell, 31 July 1864
Hd Qrs Army of the Cumberland
Near Atlanta Geo July 31st 1864

Dear Kate
I received your letter of July 21st on the 29th

This is Sunday morning and as camp is quiet and I have leasure I thought I would write you a few lines

The last letter that I wrote to you was on the 23rd when our Camp was within three miles from Atlanta. we moved camp on the 26th one mile to the rear, as it got rather unhealthy to stay their as the rebels through shell around Hd Qrts two shells exploded near camp and two pieces came into our camp one came near our tents and / a great many went over they make a unpleasant noise as they go over the tents and you do not know wether they are going to make you a viset or not. but no person was hurt in our camp, several was wounded and kild around us.

Our new camp is about four miles from Atlanta. they have not reached us yet and I do not think that they can Their has been several fight since we have been here, and we have captured a great many prisoners.

Gen Hooker (or fighting Joe as he is called) went home the other day. it is reported that it was on account that he did not get command of Gen McPherson / command after he was kiled. Gen Howard got it. it is the Dept for the Tennessee. I was sorry to heare that Hooker has left as he was a good Corps commander

Leut Taylor told me some time ago that Harry West was engaged. that was before I left Chattanooga.

I was told the other day that several promotion was made in the regiment Ned Smith is a Lieut of his company. I was very glad to heare it, and our old Ord, Sergt. Phillips was made a Lieut. he was Sergt Major of the Regt.

I expect to see the Regiment before long as it is reported they are going to leave Nashville in a few days. I am very / ancious to see the boys as it has been some time since I have seen them. How I would like to be with the Reg. but I do not expect to be with them, as I think that they will keep us at Hd Qrs till our time is up. Befor you get this it will be two years since I enlisted and near two years since I left home How I would like to see you all as two years is a long time to be away from home, and I think that it will be one year more before I have the pleasure but if I keep well as I have done it will soon pass, as the two years have pass quicker than I expected it would

I must now stop as I have nothing more to write about.

Remember me to all
Give my love to all

           Good bye
                        from your affectionate brother
