John W. Caldwell to Kate W. Caldwell, 18 September 1864
Hd Qrs Army of the Cumberland.
Atlanta Geo. Sept 18th 1864

Dear Kate
I wrote to you last Sunday and I suppose that you have received it before this. since I last wrote I have received two letters from you, one on the 13th of August 30th and one on the 16th written on the 6th It has been raining all day long commenced some time last night so it has keept me inside of the tent near all day. as I had nothing to do out side I thought I had better keep dry

If it had not rained I intended to go to church to day as I have not been inside of a church since I left Chattanooga, / over four months, but I have heard several sermonds since I left. I gess it will be hard work for me to set still in church when I get home.

Yesterday I drew new clothing for the boys and was bussy giving them out till late last night. their is a great deal of working to do when I get clothes, making out rolls and getting them signed. a full sute of clothes trowsers 3.55, Blouse 3.12 shirt 1.53, draws 90, boots 2.92, and stocking 32 coat & hat 1.65 cost - $13.99 do you not think that is a cheap sute, and when they are new they look very nice It cost me about fourty dollars a year, and I suppose if I was home it will take several times that much and not look much better. I do not know what made me write about my clothes, but I gess you would like to / know all about soldiers.
The colt that I wrote about is dead. it died before we made the flank movement, and I was glad to get rid of it, as it would have been too much trouble on the march.

What is Will Beatty doing or is he at the old busness, but I suppose he is doing something by this time, as he is thinking about getting married. How strange it will seam when I get home to see so many of my old friends eather married or engaged. I received a letter a few days ago from Mrs DeWilt inquireing about her brother. I do not know wether you have met or not; but she boarded at the same place with the Huddell family.

I did not answer it as Mills said that he would write, and told me it would not be of any / use.

We expect to be paid in a few days. it has been eight months since we was paid last, so we will have plenty of mony, more than I will know what to do with at present, but I will take all I can get as mony is a thing that every person like to have.

It is still raining very hard and I would not be surprise that it would rain for several days

I will stop and hope to heare soon from you

I am well

Give my love to all

                        Good bye
            from your affectionate brother
