Capt. I. H. Payne )
Warrenton. Va )
My Dear Sir:- Having an
opportunity to send a letter through to Richmond
by hand. I accordingly send you this.
I must first speak of a matter which may perhaps
require an explanation from me. The amount
that you were so kind as to loan us when we left
Warranton, was left by us with our agent in Rich-
mond (agt. 5th Txs Regt,) with directions toi deposit in the hands
you requested. We were so pressed for timeor my brother
would have attended to it himself. However, we believed the
agent to be strictly honest. Soon after we left Richmond
he (our agent) ran away to the Yankees - taking a consid-
erable sum of money belonging to members of our Regt.
Believing therefore that he had not deposited your money
in the bank, I immediately, upon hearing of his conduct
and in a very short time after my arrival home, I forwarded
by the Capt. of my Company, (who was at home on furlough)
the amt. ($15.00) to my brother, who was on the march
into Pa. He gave the money to a gentleman who was
going to your vicinity. I have never been able to
hear a word from you, nor do I know if you
have rec’d. a cent of the money, I to you,
nor a word as to my whereabouts. On this matter
I certainly should act upon the negative, and send
the full amount again. If I was quite sure that it
would be any more fortunate than before, will you
write to me about this matter? I will never be satisfied
until the debt has been paid. Please ascertain also,
what the amt. was that we owe Miss Porter - the
Old Maid my brother borrowed money from, in
Warrenton.
Captain, I feel that I can never return the deep
debt of gratitude I am under to yourself and
family. But I vow to Heaven that if an opportunity
ever presents I will do every thing in my power.
You spoke of moving to Birmingham after the war - do
come if possible - times are flourishing in Mexico.
If you come I will be able to assist you in many
ways. It will afford me ththe greatest pleasure to do so.
I am now practicing medicine at Independence -12
miles from Bringham. Nothing will afford me more
nor greater pleasure than to see yourself & family
in my neighborhood.
Remember me in much love to your good Lady
your sister Miss Mary & the dear little boys.
I am ever your anxious friend
D H. Robertson
