Wilson Sproul to Sibling, 1864
[fragment]
but it was a hard thing to see a fort like that to go up. I did not see it but they say that it was buried a whole regiment of rebs (that was in the pitts next the fort) alive it is hard I know but I wish that the leaders of the rebellion was all in the fort wen it was blown up, and blown in the Union right or rong and make them submit to the yanks at all hazzards. but it is not so and it will not be so I suppose. but this rebellion will not last many months longer I dont think. and I hope that it will soon / be brought to a close. we was relieved last night by a part of the 18th Corps in the front line of works, and are now in our old camp, well and harty as ever, and hope that this will find you all in good health. our line is nearly the same now as it was before this great muss. I think that I have told you lots of news now. so I must close as they are a calling us out for to clean up the camp. I will close hopeing to hear from you soon.
My love to you all.

P.S.
You must excuse all in this note for we drawed half rationes of wiskey this morning, for what we have done the 4 or 5 days past, and it would amount to about a thimble full or a little over but not mutch over. so it has not had mutch affect as to my pen I think although it has made some very crooked markes. You said that you hoped soon to hear from or see me. I gess that you will hear from me first & I want to get about a dozen letters from you before that time goes round. I will answer and every day if you will write it to me, so you would get daily news. but I dont suppose that you have / time to do so, and I dont hardly think that I would have time to write so often. I have been out and helped clean up the street and carry some of the dirt away. You must excuse the fib in this letter for I said I would close half an hour ago and have not yet. (or I did close at the time for a few minutes) so I will now close hopeing to hear from you twice as soon
