Silas Chase to Henry A. Caldwell, 21 January 1863
Bowling Green Ky Jan 21th/63
H. Coldwell Deare Sir as I have an opportunity now of wrighting I send you a few lines to let you know how I am getting along. I have been hearty & well ever since I left home, till within a day or two I have been troubled with a diareah But am getting better now. I have not been getting on to the Regt as fast as I expected to when I left home but it may be well enough as it is for my regt has been in the fight at Muffresburough. 1 man killed in our Com and several wounded. But I believe it has not suffered as much as some other companies has in the Regt. I wrote you a letter while at Lewisville some 6 or 7 weaks ago but it may be you havent got it or if you hav written the letter has gon on to the regt. I would have wrighten oftener but the Railroad track has / been torne up for some time betweene this and Lewisville which hinders the maile from gowing throw with any certainty I would rather be in my a company in the 64 regt on acount of being with the boys from my own neighborhood, but I suppose we will have to content ourselves where we are untill Gen. Matson & Granger will a gree to let us go to our Regt's. there is but one man in this regt that I was acquainted with when at home but have got acquainted with a greate many since I came here. we had a snow here about a weeake ago about 6in deap and since it has been gowing of slowly with raine which makes it rather slushey and disagreable getting around. we have been here at Bowling Green about 6 weeks an as soon as we came here we were for put into a convalescent Regt called the 1th Convalescent Regt and have been keep here ever since. I am using my knee for a wrighting table and it is beginning to get tired so I must draw my scribbling to a close wright soone and let me know how you are prospering and what kind of weth weather you have up there. So no more at present But remains your friend.
S. Chace
