Silas Chase to Henry A. Caldwell to Henrietta Caldwell, 22 May 1863
Murfreesboro Tenn
May 22th 1863
Mr Hhenry and Henryetta Coldwell. Deare Brother and Sister I received a letter from you a little over a weeake ago stating that you were all well which I was glad to heare. I am well and hearty at this time I do not know whether I wrote to you about having the Rheumatism or not in my last letter. I did have them about two weeaks pretty bad but they have left me and I am now able for my rations we are still in the same camp we were in when I wrote to you last and folowing the same business (that is) building fortifycations /
This place is getting to be quite a military depot. we have a Sawmill in our camp in operation and another one nearly ready to start. we alsoe have a regimental Bakerry started in our Regt. this is a nice institution because we were getting pretty tired of hard tack as we call them and think that Bakers Bread is a pleasent substitute. The health of our regt is pretty good now. There is some talk of us leaveing this place but I do not know any thing certain about it. while we are so well fixed here I believe I would a little rather stay than go to marching, but I suppose I will not have the say in that. the men here like theire / officers here in this department and have confidence in them. they have a good-eal of cofidence in Old Rosecrans since the fight here. I think that was a foolish trick in Henryetta cutting her finger off. She should try to have better luck next time, not wishing to speake lightly of it for I should suppose it was a pretty sore operation. I wrote two letters to Uncle Ezkiel and one to James Boogs Boggs but havent received any answer yet. it may be they have been missedcaried. I will inclose in this $20.00 as I am not needing it you can do as you wish with it if you are needing any you can use it. I have been cooking for the Captain the and two Lieutenants for the last weeake. / cosequently I have a pot of beanes on the Fire cooking for dinner and they nead tending. So I mus stop wrighting for this time wright soon as you get this so I may know whether it got throug safe no more but remains your friend and brother
S. Chace.
