William Dunlap to Sister, 11 August 1863
Camp Near War-
renton Va. Aug.11./63
Dear Sister: I sit down to answer your kind letters of 3rd & 4th it gave me a good deal of pleasure to hear that you were all well. I wrote you a letter every weak and one to Matilda since I got in camp so if you do not get them it not my fault you said that you had to pay six cents on two of my letters this must have been the fault of the stamps for I never / sent you or Matilda a letter without a stamp on but some times we get our stamps wet and then they are not so good one night on a march when I awoke in the morning the water was runing through under me and a bout 3 inches in my knapsack so you can see how we get them spoiled Some times I put stamps on the envellopes just when I get new. So if I do not succeed in sending them to you without you having to pay double postage after I paid / it once I will have to send them without stamps. all that leaves this regiment without stamps, has on Soldier letter when the pack a letter the take it up to head quarters of the regiment and put them in a bag that is generaly hung out on a three and before it is taken away the Chaplain takes it down and looks all the letters over and all that has no stamps on he he markes them Soldiers letter and mostly signs the Majors name to it so you / see that all letter that goes there had a stamp on when it left or soldiers letter I should answered matilda first but thought I would not answer hers till I would see whether I can get a chance of expressing my money home or not she may look for a letter in a day or two I do not remember whither I got yours of the 13 or not for I read them answer them and burn them I always post them myself I must close nomore at present but I remain your true Brother Wm Dunlap
