Town Va. March 23/64
Dear Sister: I received yours of the 15th a few days ago, and I read it with pleasure only I was sorry to hear that you had cut your thumb I would have answered your letter sooner but I received yours & Matilda's on the same day so I answered hers and thought I would wait a few day so you will hear from me offener then you would if I wrote to both at once. I thought I would got home before this time but some says that all those that gets home / pays the captain for their furloughs but that is what I will never do if I do not get home to my time is up for I am opposed to pay for what is my rights whithout. you were right about Mr McDowd for he was married about the time you said. I am well at present and hope this may find you all the same. The boys are all well and are getting along finally I will now close and hope to hear from you soon. from your true and affectionate brother

you said that James had told Mary who I had for you. but that cannot be so for I never tell him anything of the kind for I know he is your enamy as well as mine and if I would tell him he would try and get up a quarrel if he could. all he knows about it was what he heard a few days ago that young man come into our tent and we were talking about going home in furloughs & he said he would like to get a furlough and go home with me. I am prety sure that neither James nor Mary knows anything / about it. I think Mary is trying to pick something out of you. did Robert Guyton see if he did he would know it. but I can insure you that no person in this company ever saw it nor do they know I sent it. I will say he is just as nice as his likeness I would be very well satisfied to have him for a brother-in-law I think I have wrote enough of this so I will bid you good by
