Charles W. Hill to Edward A. Hill, 16 November 1862
Camp near Newbern
Nov 16 1862
Dear Eddie
I guess you must have a little letter as I suppose you like to hear from papa now he is away off to the war.
Perhaps Mother has told you about our house I believe I have not. We live here in a cloth house. it is about as large as the pontoon we used to have when we lived in Marlboro
There are fifteen of us who live in this one. We have to keep all our things round the outside on the ground. We sleep on the ground with rubber blankets under us and a woolen over us we have a little bit of a stove in the middle / of our house which keeps us very comfortable. We have no chairs but sit on our knapsacks (Mother will tell you what they are) They also answer for our pillows when we do not use our boots which we do some times. Now dont you think we have a funny way to live? I like it very well now but I shouldn’t want to live so all the time I hope sometime to come back and live with you again. I shall if God thinks best
Mother wrote that you thought you should go to war when you were big enough I hope there will not need to be any war then. If men would only do right there would not be any war how much better it would be I hope all the little boys like you will grow up to do right with much love and a kiss
From your dear papa C. P. Hill
