Dr. J. R. Smiley
Dr Sir
I have left today at the Express office a package of clothing addressed to you which will doubtless be received in due time and I hope will prove of some use to Robert.
Mrs Smiley writes in relation to Books of yours which Robert had. I do not find them among his effects in my possession. I will enquire for them here and shall probably obtain them—unless the [?] have been left at Dr. Lanes’. When the 3d Rg. went to Bermuda Hundred they took little or no baggage with them Richard, for th security of some papers sent his trunk home to me. He took a valese with him which I have since received The balance was sent to Norfolk where I presume it still remains Acting Maj. Maxwell has written that he will forward what remains as soon as he can obtain it. Robert is here I presume but I have not seen him for a/week. He is detailed for duty here and has as yet been very busily occupied. He talks of returning to his Regiment to be mustered out and re-mustered, but had not decided when I last met him
With respects for Mrs S. and other members of the family I remain
Yours
G.W. E[?]
