Daniel Davis to David Davis, 17 July 1864
Camp of 46th Regt P.V.V.
near Chattahoochie River Ga
July 17th 1864

Dear Bro Dave
Having some spare time this morning I take advantage of it in writing to you although having written but a few days ago. I fear I will have nothing of interest to give you for we have been laying quietly in Camp ever since. our pickets are at the River with the Johnny's on the oppisite bank. they have made an agreement not to fire on one another and last week were a quiet intimate time trading tobacco for coffee &c the Johnnys & our men would bathe together and swim from one shore to other, have a chat, and back again they would go as unconcerned as you please. they have a new name for our men instead of calling him "Yank" they call him "Billy Fed." yesterday the trading and &c was stopped by order of the Rebel / Officers. the Rebs gave as a reson for it they thought there was a movement of some kind on hand. I think so too for during the past day or two there has been heavy cannonading on different portions of the line I am inclined to think we will soon be on the move again although I would just as leive stay in our present Camp for a week or so longer. we have everything fixed up splendid and are enjoying ourselves first rate. we have plenty of music to while away the evenings as almost every Brigade has a Brass Band. our Division is on the extreme left of the Corp joining Jeff C. Davis' Div of the 14th Corps. Geary's division is about a mile to our right with Butterfield's in the centre

I suppose there is great excitement throughout Penna on account of the recent Rebel invasion. you "emergency men" will have to be stirring yourselves a little or the Johnnys will get into Harrisburg this time /

the Papers you sent have reached me and come very good in relieving the tedious moments which we sometimes have in Camp I am very sorry that Bob Williams is so very sick you will please remember me to him and his wife. I wish you in your next to send me Cousin Annie's directions as I promised to write to her and will do so when I have time

Give my love to Mother Sisters & Bro's to all inquiring Friends receive the same yourself from your
