Daniel Davis to David Davis, 30 August 1864
Camp of 46th Regt P.V.V.
on Chattahoochie River Ga
Aug 30th/64

Dear Bro Dave
Your welcome letter of the 20th inst. received about ten Oclock last night and as this is the only oppertunity I shall have to day I improve it by answering at once. by my letters to Henry & Billy McM yesterday you will know the whys and wherefores of our being at this place.

Our Regiment is now encamped on a high hill a short distance from the river with a splendid view of the country all around and a good position in case we are attacked, as it is probable we will be for our Corp is the only one following Johnny and our supply Depot unless Sherman gives them enough to do in watching his movements. /

we have a very nice Camp every thing fixed for comfort a large arbor running the whole length of the Company street so that we are not troubled with the heat which has been very great for the past few weeks. the River is as wide as the Lehigh and deeper so that we can bathe when ever we wish. how long we can stay and enjoy it we dont know

Our corp is streched along the Rail Road for a great ways the 4th Division being streched from Decherd Tenn to Marietta Ga. while the other three Div are guarding the fords & bridges on the River. the 4th Division is composed mostly of Regts from the old 11th Corps together with a number of Negro Regiments they have never been with us having been under command of Gen Ruseau at Nashville. now they have been brought forward to guard the road / I havent seen a Niggor Regiment yet. there is none along with this Army as Sherman dont believe much in them as you can see by his letter to the recruiting Agent from Mass.

                        no more

My respects to Bob Williams & Wife

also to Billy McM and others of my acquaintance

My love to Mother, Sisters & Bro's
            and same yourself from
                        your aff Bro
                                    Dan
