Daniel Davis to Brother, 14 October 186X
Camp Lewis Oct 14th
Dear Brother
I have just received the papers which you have sent me. I am greatly surprised at not receiving any letters from you I have written two letters from this place and as yet have not received an answer to either of them. Lieut Thomas has told me that you have written two or three letters to me since I have been here but I have not received any except one which was directed to Camp Kalorama. all the rest of the boys have received answers to their letters and I dont see why my letters have miscarried any more than the rest. I and the rest of the boys are well. We are encamped / about a half a mile from the other camps The New York 28th are the nearest to us. We are in the third Brigade which consists of a Massachusetts I believe the 4th Reg the 6 Connecticut, the New York 28th & the 46 P.V. We are getting along pretty well with drilling. If you were here you would see us going through Hardee in a way that would astonish you. I have often wished that you could see us on dress parade and regimental drills and see the grand review of all the troops of this Division. We have grand times in Camp. We have plenty of ballplaying pitching quoits and other amusements. in the evenings we sing songs and talk of the great stories that we hear from home about us. I heard that you had it at home that we were two days and two nights without anything / to eat and that the Col was shot and the Regiment in open mutiny. I can tell you that we have many a hearty laugh at the reports that reach us from home. Our tent is always full of the boys The Captain and Lieut Thomas drop in almost every evening and help us to sing and to spin yarns. The Bethelem boys are a gay set you will see one of them down there one of these days He will start for home on a furlough on Thursday and will be up to Catasauqua to see Charley Houke. Sam knows him. his name is Charles B. McCarty.
