Sylvester Strong to George Strong and Emily Strong, 28 August 1862
Camp Randall Aug 28th/62

Dear Father & Mother
I thought that I would set down and write you a few lines to let you know that we are all in our tent. It is pretty warm here to day. Just warm enough to make a fellow lazy. We have had orders to hold our selves in readiness to march on Friday Morning at nine Oclock for St Louis Mo. But I dont know whether we will get off to morrow or not but I think that we wont get off till Saturday or Sunday. I suppose that we will go by the way of chicago Alton and St Louis RR.

Jo Rundell and Steever / got a furlough to go to Milwaukee to stay for about six hours. I sent in by Steever my white shirt and my old felt hat to be left at Buell & Goodmans. I wish that you would call the next time that you are up town and get them. Tell Charles that I have not any papers from him the last two days. tell him that he must write and not waite for me for he can hear all the news when I write to you. We have to be up dressed in camp We have be up for roll call at five and drill from six till seven and then march to breakfast and drill again from ten till Eleven and at half past / twelve we march to dinner and and out again at four Oclock for battalion drill and at five Oclock we march to supper and out again at six for dress Parade and for roll call in the evening at nine Oclock and then turn in for the night I suppose that my pictures got home all safe as the stuff that you sent came to me. I have not used up that Wine yet but I am saving it to fill my canteen with when we start for dixie so to have it on the way. Arch says that he is much obliged to you for that refrigerator and that medicine. What do you think of that tall rough looking soldier /

there are a great many here now for the twenty Third regiment. Among them are just two Milwaukee boys that I know those are Charles Randsom and Arch McFadden. the later is second lieutenant of capt Hazeltons co. I suppose that ere you get this I will be on my way to dixie If you learn where we stop in the paper before you do frome me I wish you would right away this is all I have to say this time

            From your affectionate son
Escuse all Errors                     S. Strong

PS give my love to all enquiring
and Oblige
