Springfield Nov 13th 1862

Dear Friends at Home
I received 4 letters yesterday three that was written in Sept one the 22d 25d 30th and one from Chas Maxfield written Nov 4 These are those letters that you got no answers from me when I was first taken sick at Rolla. I dont know where they have been. I am at that great place called springfield now we dont fare any better than we did at Rolla. I am in a place that they call a Hospital we draw our rations and have to cook them for ourselves. Jim Piercy is here with me now. he had a shake of the ague yesterday for the first time in a week or more /

Springfield is quite a place it is on considerable of an elevation It a great deal larger place than Rolla. It has a bank and a court House and an Arsenal besides several quite large Churches. Most of the principal Buildings are built of red brick. And there are a good many nice private dwelings here. The houses that we use for Hospitals are two large frame houses built in the best shape. They are properly taken from Rebels. The regiment is with in fourteen miles from here at a small place called Ozark. They have had some pretty tall marching since they left here. They marched seventy two hours on two meals / with out any sleep. they have had a pretty tough time of it I tell you. I would like to with them a gain. I dont see as I gain any I keep just about so one day I will feel pretty well and the next day I wont feel near so well. When I walk about all and am on my feet all the time they swell and pain me so I cant hardly walk on them. and I am very weak in my joints. Tell Charles to send me some papers direct through to Springfield and see if I cant get regular. I wrote you on the 9th the next day after I arrived here. I see in one of the letters that I got yesterday that you wanted to know whether I got the paper and Envelopes / or not. I think that I have got all you have sent me except that first that was stoped on the way. Has that Mrs Buell come to light yet. How are my employees a making it go now days. How does the old wagon and pony look How does that little gal get along now days. This is all I have to say this time. write as often as you can answer this soon give my love to all my enquiring. I remain your affectionate son
