John J. Miller to Alfred E. Shelton, 9 April 1864
Block 1. Room 12. Johnson's Island. O. April 9th 1864.

Mr. A. E. Shelton,
Friend Eugene, Your letter of April __. was recd to-day. It is needless to say that its contents was painful in the extreme, doubly so, coming as it did, at a time when I am so powerless to do anything. I had not been advised of the ill condition of L—'s health; & I sincerely trust that you may be decieved in your opinions in regard to her true condition. It would be useless for me to say anything here, in regard to the terms upon which I would be most likely to obtain a release; you & all of my friends know full well my views upon that point. Contending, as I am, with two emotions, this is the severest trial of my life; my feelings can only be appreciated by those similarly situated. If it should become necessary, I should like to exhaust evry possible means at all likely to succeed, before contemplating the one above refered to; & in that event, I have a plan by which I think a favorable result may be obtained & entirely creditable to all parties. Please be kind enough to keep me constantly advised of L—'s true situation. Express to her my deepest sympathies & assure her that she has my sincerest wishes & prayers for her speedy recovery. Remember me kindly to all the family & to all enquiring friends. Write soon

                                                                        Believe me your friend sincerly,
                                                                                                Jno J. Miller
