Chimborago[?] Hospt Sept 25 1864
My Esteemed friend
Your very interesting & long expected letter came duly to hand after an absence of several weeks & I can assure you was eagerly perused, as I am always delighted to hear from old & esteemed friends. This leaves me not well to day. I am suffering very much again with my teeth & gums. I hope you are improving & enjoying your furlough. News about this place is a little scarce. The authorities have made a draw on the Hospitals around town for convallescents to guard prisoners & all other duty necessary about town & the reserves have been sent out. a very large regiment was collected from all the Hospitals. Mrs Tschude still flys around as defiant as ever. you can imagine to yourself that you see her. Miss Mary & Jen Cooper are great friends to me. I get as much good victuals as I want & you know that suits me. Jack is still Jack. we received a good many Prisoners this week sent here from point look out sick most of them have been furloughed poor fellows they look lowly & much care worn /
Mr Edwards meeting is still going on he is having a fine meeting of it a great many women & a great many have professed the little old man preaches with his [?] time warmth & zeal you ought to be here. Now suppose you get on the cars & come down to see us & stay a few days. I know your company is acceptable & would be much sought after. I should be much pleased myself, but it is idle to talk thus for you cannot leave the sweet endearments of home to stay even a short while among your [?] friends in an old long despised Hospital. I can't blame you though I should be more than glad to see you. The war rumor is not atall cheering just now Genl Earley has met with a very painful disaster. I am sorry but such is the fate of war. we might not be [faded] it is also reported that Gen Brown of Ga has withdrawn his troops from the Confederate forces & is going into the Union that is a report I give it for what it is worth I must close as my paper has given out write soon and give all the news I am as ever your true friend A. S. Shepherd
