My Dear wife I now take my pen to let you know that I am still alive and well and am in hopes that this will find you the same and thank god with the hole of our hearts that he has spaird our lives and health you know that it was one year a go the 12 of July that I put my name down on the enlistment roll and sinc that time I have enjoyed the best of health and am in hopes to as long as I have to stay in the army and by taking care of my self and / liveing a sober and godley life I hope that I shall be spaird to meet all of my family on earth but if god has orderd otherwise oh that I may be readey to meet my god in peace and meet my friends around the throne of the most high god never more to part well Nil I suppose you want to know what I am about well Soldiering right up to the handle and now I tell you some of the Boys think it rather hard feed after laying in the baracks at washington but I rather think that I like it thear is onely one thing that I dislike and that is we dont get our mail / very regular well we have to do guard duty and picket and patrole and in fact a most every thing we have not ben paid off since we wer on upton hill and we are all prettey hard up just now that present that you sent me was just the thing for me and to think who sent it that was the best of all but you shall have your pay I dont mean that I will pay you the money now but at some future time if I live to get home will try and pay you all up and close our accounts I got a letter from Truing the other day he wants I should write him a long / letter and direct it to Savoy and I think I will soon you wrote me what cloths he had had since I left well I think that he must be getting rather expencive but if they can aford it I dont care and I hope he will be worthy of good cloths and be steadey and not think to mutch of his new cloths but trust in god he wrote me a very good letter and I hope to receive maney more from him Erastus is out on picket now I should have ben out to day but I was on guard yesterday and so I have this oportunity of writing to you I have no steel filings to keep this from blotting but the wind is laying on on the dust and that does quite as well all the boys are well that are hear Newton B. Whittman we left in washington when we left that place I have seen one letter that he wrote to Henry M his brother He was about as he had ben for some time I dont think he is aney good out hear
