Camp Near Winchester May the 5/64
 
            Nila Dear I now take my pensil in hand to write you a few words just to let you know that I am yet alive and well and hope you are the same and I pray god that he will spair all our lives and that we may meet again thear is some 17 thousand troops hear now and hopen we shall leave hear I dont know Erastus is at martinsburg I suppose but just now I hear that the rebs made a dash into Martinsburg last night but dont believe it write often                                                                                           A.N.Hubbard /
 
The 6 1862
Dear Nila as we have not left this place I will write you a few more lines our knapsacks wer sent back this morning they will go to Martinsburg I suppose so we are in light marching order that is we have onley the cloths that we have onn and we have a rubber Blanket and a woolen one or the over Coat just whitch we are amind to take but can have but one of them and our rations have to carry 60 pounds of Catridges I think we shall leave hear soon I got a letter from Newton the other day he says he dont want to hire aney more money but will take it and do with it as well as he would if it was his own so do as you are a mind / if you ever get aney I dont know when we will get paid now write often as you can and I will do the same yours in the field
