Well Nila I as I am not on duty yett to day I will try and write you a few lines just to let you know that I am still alive and well and hope you are enjoying the same great blessing in your home at the north and I hope you may never know the horrors of war as the folks in this place do but it is the fruit of secesh and let it come till the last armed fo expires or returns to the support of the old flagg which we have sworn to protect and that will be done I am shure we mooved out hear / day before yesterday and was about going into Camp when our pickets wer drove in and we started in haste and went out about one half mild and formed in line and sent out skermishers and they wer drove in verry soon they onley went some thirty pases in front of our line and then came in and at it we went had just got under headway when our left fell back and we wer in great danger of being flanked but we fell back behind a fence and small bank and then we gave them what bullets we had left thear was 1 man killed in Co A and 2 men wounded in the regiment I dont know who they wer / the rebel battery threw their shells right over our Co and but one exploded in front of our line and that did no harm to us thanks be to god the giver of every good and perfect gift it rained all the time that we wer engaged and all night we stayd in our position all night and in the morning we fell back about half a mild and got a good position and have throwed up breastworks again I dont know what we should do if we could not have breast works do you I like them as French says they are splendid and I think so to by the way I suppose you have received a five Dollar bill before this I sent one to you and shall look for the / receipt of the same soon I think I done prettey well dont you to send five Dollars in most one year well if I live to gett home I will try and make up for all that you suffer for want of money but by the way Billey Jordan had forty three dollars stole from him the other night I think perhaps he was a little might happey as he calls it but I thank god Nila that your All does not gett Happey in that way but I am happy when I can sit down and read and prey god to watch over and protect my little family and that he may spair my life to return to them and I feel that I can trust him the man that was killed was on the colors when I was he was promoted Corp and put on them at piedmont since to Lance Seargant but has got through now I have written to the girls and mother since we wer paid off no more this time your old Boy
