Camp Near Whitehouse Va Sept the 10 64
My Dear wife I was thinking to night that I would like to step in and give you a good shake of the hand and get one good kiss if not more but as I can not se you nor step in nor kiss so I will write a few lines to let you know that I am still in the Land of the liveing and am well and teough and saucey as you know that I can be but am some afraid to show it you know that but enough of this how are you getting along and what are you doing and how are you doing it now just tell me all about it and how is that breaking out has it all dried up if it is your scroffulous humor be carfull and not let it get the upper hand of you for you know that it is a hard master if it getts the uper hand so you / se that you keep my Nila safe and sound as far as you can and as god the giver of every good and perfect gift for if I live to come home I want to se Nila looking as hale and hearty as when I left old Hawley and I ask god to watch over and protect you all and bless you all as you all kneed My health is good am getting fatt and shall soon be as fat as ever if nuthing happens to me I gott a letter from Wm yesterday they wer all well I have ben at work on the muster roles 3 days shall finish them tomorow if I work on them but it is a hard job now I tell you for thear is some 92 men that you have got to write the name and whear they lived when they enlisted by whoome for how long and at what time when mustered and by whoome and whear mustered and by whome / and when paid and by whome and all that can be thought of but enough of this for I dont want to trouble your brain about what I have to go through but now but I must stop for I am haveing a hard dispute about old abe and the administration but they are begining to dry up and I will stop

Nila since writing the above I have received a letter dated the 3 of Sept and was glad to hear from you and to hear that you wer all well but you ask me about your going to work in a paper mill and say you will / as I say well I can settle that then at once you will stay whear you are and let the paper mills alone as long as I live and oblige me verry much if you cannot live just say so and I will provide some other way than for you to go to work in a old paper mill no more
