My Dear wife I now take this oportunity to let you know that god has still spaird my life day before yesterday we had a awfull hard battle near winchester but drove them hilter skilter to fishers hill some 5 milds from hear we had 8 men wounded three slight Cap't in the foot verry slight the serg't Mitchell Cotrell Hayden Wiley McCarty Grady Newton the two last are with us now I am acting ordeley as / I am the oldest non commishoned offiser in the companey hear we have but 3 of us Corps aney way hear and no sergt but me lance you know the Cap't has to rid so I am in Command of the Companey and have 26 men my health is good and I thank god I can write no more this time so good Day
