My Dear I now seat my self to write you a few lines to let you know that I am still alive and well while others all around me are dying the other day after our fight at fishers hill after we had got all through our Major was axidentaley shot in the leg and has since died he was a verry nise man and now we have no Cap't in the Co for Cap't Potter is in Command of the regiment but to day when we started to leave hear Blake the last Sergant Major who has ben promoted come and took Command and I / am glad of it for now I have onley the ordeleys duty to do and that is enough for me now I tell you for I cant leave a moment for if I do they are shure to be hear and want something this morning I had to make out an invantory of the things that the men had that is guns Catridge Box belts Belt plates bayonet scabard cap box Ball screw spring vise wormer sight rench screw driver knapsack Haversack canteen shelter tent and so forth & so on and before I got half done the Adjutant came and wanted nine men and a Corporal with all their things to go forageing so I had to stop and detail them and get them off and then finish up the / thing and I was right glad when I got through now I tell you and I get tired laying round but I will try and be patient and contented with my lot for I am used first rate the Cap't is good and all of the offisers to me as I could wish I got your letter of the 11 I think it was written and was glad to hear that you was well you write that you suppose I thought I had done it well no I dont think I have but should like to muchley well you say you dont se how I could send so much money I think it was time I sent some you may not get as much next time but I will send you all that I can spair for I want to have enough to get us some things if I live to / get Home and se if you can have as good things as your sister Mrs Taylor if you want it so you can save as much as you can but dont suffer for aney thing that money will get have you got your ewe lamb yett if so what did you pay and have you paid it dont run in debt now Nila if you spend every sent that I send home dont get in debt and dont have aney old store bills to have to pay intrest on but pay for what you get and get what you want now Nila dont think that I am afraid you are spending more than you should for I know that my Nila will save all she can possibley but I say it to fill out the sheet and to let you know that I think of these things no more this time
