My Dear Nila I now take my pen in hand to pen you a few lines to let you folks at home know that I am still blessed with health and streangth and a good apetite for the rations that Uncle Sam furnishes for us and gett enough at that our Drummer went out forageing yesterday and he brought in a hen which I coked and we had a splendid meal three of us now dont think because three of us ate one hen that we are unwell for we call our selves healthy and I hope we shall /
 
well as I was saying we had a good meal and then we lay down and enjoyed a good nights rest and woke up and found three of our boys had come to us in the night Needham Meacham and Asa N Elder and we wer glad to se them now I tell you you ask me what Peter Baker has ben about this summer I am shure I dont know and you speak of my forgetting you in that way No Nila you kneed not fear that for how could I forgett the onley ones that I have on earth to love or care for me No Nila as long as god spairs my life my heart will remain yours and my childrens and if / god spairs my life to come home and I firmely believe he will how much shall we enjoy those those little prayer meetings we are expecting Gen Grant hear this afternoon but what the object is we know not but shall wait and se and then we shall know without guessing but Nila I am writing much oftener than I can hold out I fear but I was deprived so long from writing and I said I would make it up if I ever got whear I could and I think I have done it you speak of repaying me for that present of five Dollars well I will talk with you about that when I get home we / will let it go on the old account at present I suppose you have had another small sum presented to you before this time at least it should of got thear before this it is not as much as I wished to send but to tell the truth we had ben so long without money that I spent some for chees and cookes that I had ought to of sent home to you but I did not and after it was gon then I thought I had done wrong and you will pleas excuse me this time will you not and I will try and do better another time but I guess that I have scratched enough and will stop for this time so good day to you
