Henry Wetzel to Sister, undated
Sister a word to your letter,
You wrote me a kind letter yet I thought when you said that you would not wonder at the soldiers if they would throw down their arms and let old Abe fight it out that you thought so. O, Sister I hope you do not look for the soldiers home in that way; why it would be horrible, I think. If old Abe does not do right they should try some other good man and see how he would get along before they stop in that way. We must trust in God and ask him to give us peace. I think our cause is just. yet I believe that it could of been settled without fighting. I hope that this rebelion will soon be crushed and that peace and prosperity will again prevail. /
You also stated that you thought it must be beautiful here just now. Sister it is; it often puts me in mind of old Cumberland County and my old dear home. All the difference I see is that we hear the booming cannon and very often the musket balls whistle about our heads which at home we did not hear so often. Brother M says that he wrote to you some time ago and that he will not write this time. Tell Ella and Anna that I will come home when the war is over and bring them some candy so that they will get sweet. I was just to hear a good sermon that our chaplain preached. He had his text in 1st Thessalonians 1st chapter and 14 verse. He spoke very good and at last he spok of two that died lately in company E and D. We have a good chaplain I think. This evening we will have prayer meeting and every Thursday evening we have. I wish you were here this evening and back again. You could not go home as soon from here as from the springs. I suppose I have written enough yet I could write much more if I had time. I will close for this time hoping to hear from you soon Farewell.
