            Dear father and famly this morning afords me the pleasur of writing to you to let you know how I am I am tolebrel well but broke down we left ppenensula & saturday morning cross the river at Druies Bluf com to this place that any which is 38 miles and ben on the line evry since but thar is no fighting in front of ous but on the left they ar fighting the yanks has thru sevel shels in this sitty with out leting eny body Know it General Bauguard sinte them word if they [?] at eny won without leting him know it & heart eny body he wood Retaliate at once they have not sence the yanks is in 2 miles of our Brigade we go out on the scout and slip on them and shoot in to them then run for life for they ar all on horses I received a letter from home last friday it was wrote 9th I was glad to her from you all tell mary the the Redgment Jim was in is up at peters lynchBurg she ask me if they kill our men when they take them they tell our men no the officers to keepe them from going to them the negros kills some of our men they say for we kill all of them. I ainte intend to take a negro we ar the sharp shooters ar agoing to kill all of them and if ther / white men with them we ar agoing to kill them so they wont tell on ous you ask me whar I was when the yanks like to got me I was in ther Brest works the sharpe shooter was orderd to folow them to see whar they was agon & me and some mor ran on a head taken prisoners and hunting plunder & they was in the bushes a watching of ous they mad me take the big swamp they holow to me to halt but no time to halt thar I wont stop for them if I am a 100 yards from them they have shot so much at me it looks like they cant hit me
 
well you can her mor by the papers then I can say it dont look like they will ever quit fighting I cam thro the Battle ground whar Brother was capturd I saw lots of graves along the road but cood not find his I dont think he is ded onless he dide after they got him Oh how sad I felt hunting for my Brothers grave I will wont have no brother to hunt mine God grant I may live thro this war and return home soft and roun I will close for the canon is so ner me I cant write pleas excuse this bad letter I dont think you can even read this but cant help it What is the reason Jo & tildy wont write I wood love to her from them I will close for this time hoping to her from you soon                  I remain your
