Nathaniel Lyon to Eugene A. Carr, 9 July 1861
Head Quarters
Camp on Grand River
July 9 1861.
Captain.
I have your note of the 7th. I am credibly informed that the enemy is in force and fortifid about 12 or 18 miles south from you. You must inform Capt Totten & Col Andrews and take at once a strong and well guarded position in crossing the Osage. I shall doubtless come up to night. your man Smith is doubtless an impostor. I have heard of the fight with Sizel who is in command at Springfield & suppose there is some foundation for the story. it is said Jackson has a another Camp at Greenfield some 35 or 40 miles from you. My supply train will come up to night and you must try and get something from it
Respectfully
your Obdt Servt
