General Grants Grand March To Vicksburg
In the Early part of may, so the book of records say
General Grant with the army of the Union
Notwithstanding rebel blows determined where to go
To strike on the head of rebellion
At grand gulph we met them first and there they got the worst
They withdrew from the field in confusion
We captured several guns and caused them all to run
And surender to the army of the union
At Ramond next we came and there it was the same
They trembled when they saw us advancing
And when the charge was made they prefered some other shade
And retreated in their own style of marching
We left our prisioners there, and to Jackson did repair
Here we met the seigniors of rebellion
Palmeto boys did boast of their rebellious host
But acknowledged for once we did repel them
We whipt them all around though well they stood their ground
They knew not the foe they were fighting
They stood well at Champion hill but soon they got their fill
And to black river all went a kiting
Then next at our command we at Vicksburg took our stand
And requested General Pem to surrender
His answer being nay we commenced without delay
To charge on its hopeful defender
Their heads they soon withdrew, for our riflemen were true
The bullets filled the air in profusion
If a rebel showed his pate he was shure to be to late
For we sent him to the happy land of freedom /
The states of the north have sent souldiers down south
To clean out the rebels and shut up their mouth
For they all got saucy and finaly agreed
It would be a fine thing for them to secede
and thats whats the mater
We once was a nation united and strong
But curse the rebellion now evry thing wrong
When they fired fort sumpter they poisened their flesh
But the dog is most dead and his name is sesesh
and thats whats the mater
