in the State of virginia
i dond now the name of the county. i dont think that their is any counties in the State or at least i have not enquired. under stand that
now Sir i till you what it is i receaved your letter on the 31st of oct. it was dated the 26th i had forgot all about it that i sent one to you. So i put it in my pocket till i had finished my supper. but if i had thought that it was from you i would have stoped all & read it. but you see that i thought that it was from some old bummer i dond mean to say that you are a bummer not at all (excuse that /
now i tell you what it is i are well & feel Just like fighting cock. i might say that as well as anything else. now in this letter i will say that their is nothing of any account agoing on. although i heard today that their was a battle agoing on. i did not hear any cannon it was of some 8 or 10 miles south west of this place. i dare not tell all that is agoing on in the army. if i should my letters would not go & perhaps i might get arrested for telling the truth. i suppose that you hear up their of greate victorys by our army but the one half is not true that i will say. if you never get this i have put letters in the office & i now they never went / when we ware further in Virginia then our letters went to washington & their was examined. but since we have got up hear they all go to Genl McClellans head quarters to be inspected. Sir i say that uncle Sam is in big buisiness when he hires men & pays them big prices to examine a poor Soldiers letter. these things are so. the way this war is carried on by our head men its anoughf to make anyone say that he dont care weather he lives or dies & at this present time niggerism is the question. my prair is that the devil will bless all the nigger worshipers of the north with plenty of fire & brimstone if the niggers is lat alone by the worshipers in the north then all is right /
i could sit hear all night & wright but it would amount to nothing the last battle that i was in i did all that i could do. i tell you that i thought to myself die dog or eat the hatchet i tell you that a many a thousand has lost his life just on the account of a few black harted abolitionists i dare not say much more of this give my best wishes to al around tell them that i are a true patriot to the union but not to niggers tell J.T. Dodson that i killed one rebel for him a darnd big cuss to
the paunch of him was not quite as big as old Gaisers. not quite
i think i will quit for this time
So good night Sir
Yours &c
M. A. Coms
