My Dear Hessin:
I take a moment to send you an extract from the Genl's Official Report. would send it all but am too busy in office to get it transcribed:
"Capt. W. S. Williams, 3d Ohio Battery, my Chf of Artly is entitled to great credit for the coolness & skill displayed in adjusting & using his batteries, and in saving them when exposed.
Especial notice is also due to Col. Geo. E. Bryant, of the 12th Wis. V.V. who assumed command of the 1st. Brig. when Genl. Force fell & to Lt. Col. G. F. Wiles, 78th O.V.V.I. who took command of the 2d Brig. These officers through taking command after the battle opened, displayed great coolness & skill.
Capt. G. D. Munsen, my Picket Officer was very efficient in the management of the skirmishers until driven / in, and in acting as Aid, during the balance of the time. My Aids, Lieut G. M. Porter & Lieut W. H. Hessin A.A.A.G. & Major J. T. Rainey A.A.I.G. all displayed great coolness and bravery in collecting information & delivering orders
The character of the fight was such, our front changing so often & rapidly, that the position of a staff officer was much more than usually exposed. Yet all were prompt and efficient. Lieut Hessin fell from his horse severely wounded during the latter part of the action."
You must not permit the above to be printed as part of the Genl's Official Report. it might get him into trouble with the War Dept, you understand—
Hoping you will have a safe journey, and a speedy recovery so we can ere long welcome you back, I am
Truly Yours
J. C. Douglass
