Jan. 28th 1863
Dear Brother C. D. Brown I now sit down to Direct you the State of a Poor Soldiers health. I am usualy well & hop this to find you the same. I spose you are having some tiptop times about now. But you must not go to much for your own Wellfare & good you have got a Comfortable home & enoughf & good enoughf for a Poor Mans Son to have. I hope you will look into this & hear to a word from me & one word is dont take up your time in hunting. throw it one side & go to School evory day, as I have no learning & where I cannot get any you must Be a Good Boy & stay at home & go to school & try & get something in your mind that will do you some good if I had the learning that some has I now could be Lieut or Capt. & draw my $125 Per Month, while I have no education & am nuthing but a Corp drawing $13 Per Month. you dont see the point of it now but will soon as you begin to travel & get out round any Dock I have bin a few miles since / left home a coupple a years ago & I have seen lots of tiptop looking Galls & I have Asked all of them if they would have me, & they said as what do you think said I dident know nuthing so you see your chanc is poor with mine on the Gall line.
You must be a good Boy & stay at home help Father & Mother & if I ever should happen to stumble & blunder through this War I will make you a nice Present. Deloria must be a good Girl & go to school which I guess will. Go over & see Betsy for me once in a while Mother I know who to write to with out your asistance. I have sent for a stick of Blue cealing wax & a red one send it soon some of you also I sent for $2.00 worth of stamps now I want them this is the last & the is none here to be got I sent for a Pen & holder I dont hear from that you are getting so you dont notice me much I guess. I will send you a ring of my make one theas days.
Send $2.00 worth of Stamps the same day you get this I am down on writing till they come I told Frank Mackalheny to come & see you
