Leroy Crockett to Nellie (?), 19 January 1863
Corinth January 19th 1863

Dear Nellie
I arrived here on the 17th inst and found the 72nd about one mile from town encamped in snow & mud of an uncertain depth but for all that was in good health and full of fun. They rec. me with verious demonstrations of joy such as throwing up of cups kicking and yeling. They look as tough and black as so many Indians and I may add nearly as dirty. Maj Eaton Dr Rice Agt Strong and myself occupy one tent and board at the Setters. Col. Buckland and Staff are at Jackson Tenn We are under orders to hold ourselves in rediness to moove by cares. We expect to go Memphis at least we hope so for this is the most God forsaken place in the world. Nellie it seems a little awkward to take command after being gone so long but I shal soon get inducted I will write again as soon as we arive at our distenation. direct 72nd Regt Col Bucklands Brigade via Memphis
