Nathaniel Low Jr. to Jennie Niles, 5 June 1863
Gibson House
Cincinnati O. June 5th/63

My Own Dear Jen,
I reckon you will be about as suprised as I am myself to know that I am in Cincinnati instead of being among the Tennessee Mountains

we got marching orders Wednesday night & left during the night & where do you suppose we are going, it just beats all of us. we are orderd to report at Cairo, Ill. & from there / I suppose we shall go to Vicksburg, which place will have to be taken by the 9th Army Corps—

It is going to be another long tedious trip. we got into Covington Ky. (just across the river) about two hours ago. I just stole away came over here, had a nice wash & breakfast, and now feel better. we have marched all of one night & rode another in freight cars so you can judge how tierd we feel. I got your letter yesterday of the 29th was delighted my dear to receive it. yes my dear / I shall certainly be home this summer. My resignation that is now in I expect will be box-ed on account of this move. I shant send another one in until I know for a certainty whether or no we go to Vicksburg, as it would be cowardice in military to resign just before a fight. you ask about my debts Jen. I will tell you dear I can now pay pretty well up if I left the Army to day I should not owe more than $700.00 all told, which I could pay very soon in or out the Army--& then have enough left for capital to go into some buis. maybe I shall have a chance to see Alex C. Low

Dont worry, will you my dear about my going to Vicksburg. I shall come out all right, feel it in my bones. there is just a possibility of my resignation coming at Cairo. if not why it is no use to cry but go in lemons. with all my love my dear Jen for you I am

                                                                        Your aff Hus.
                                                                                                Nat—
